Understand your options
When deciding on health insurance for you or your family, keep these important distinctions in mind:
-
Individual Marketplace
Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans, sometimes referred to as Obamacare, are major medical health insurance plans that offer coverage. Depending on your household size and income, you may qualify for premium tax credits, or other cost saving options to help reduce your monthly premiums. However, enrollment is limited to the Open Enrollment Period or when you experience a qualifying life event that makes you eligible for a Special Enrollment Period.
-
Short term health insurance plans
These plans offer coverage for common health services (doctor office visits, emergency room, hospital inpatient) for a temporary length of time. Plans are designed to be budget-friendly and to fill the need for medical coverage in between long-term, major medical insurance plans. Note, services and benefits can differ based on the plan and your state of residence.
-
Medicare plans
Medicare Advantage plans are available for those who are eligible, usually persons 65 or over, or certain individuals with a qualifying disability. Medicare Supplement Insurance plans can help reduce out-of-pocket costs. Medicare prescription drug plans (PDPs) help cover the cost of eligible medications. Medicare Advantage Enrollment occurs annually during the enrollment period that runs from October 15 to December 7.
